Legibility

Smart City Displays use E-Ink technology, which uses reflected light, as opposed to emitted light. This means that anything displayed on a Smart City Display works in any lighting condition. This means that no matter what the weather, you’ll be able to read information on Smart City Displays, as well as you would be able to read information on paper. And when it gets dark, low-power front-lit LED will ensure that information will be easily displayed in later hours too.
Flexibility

Smart City Displays are flexible, so they can potentially be mounted on rounded surfaces, such as pillars in an underground network, or on the corners of buildings, allowing for greater media opportunities compared to traditional displays. More interactive advertising and more detailed information are possible with Smart City Displays. The displays are also almost 1/3rd lighter than current LCD displays, meaning that installation is possible in a wide variety of locations, whilst also being easier.
Durability

Smart City Displays are also durable and reliable. With built-in environmental robustness, Smart City Displays are protected from moisture, UV rays and are flame resistant.
Longevity

For normal periods of operation, Smart City Displays are designed to last more than 10 years. This in turn reduces long-term maintenance and replacement costs.
Environmentally Friendly

Smart City Displays are over 36 times more energy efficient than a similar sized LCD screen. This means that the amount of power used in an LCD display for 20 hours would last 720 hours in a Smart City Display. The benefits of this are a huge reduction in energy consumption and carbon footprint.

London Science Museum Lates Session

September 2016

Our Digital Bus Stops were recently on show at the Science Museum Lates Session, demonstrating what future bus stops will look like and how they will operate. These new bus stops aim to keep Transport for London's customers informed of the latest bus routes and times by displaying data in real-time, hopefully ensuring that they have a quick and efficient journey.

First Innovative E-paper London Bus Stop Deployed

November 2015

The first ever E-paper real-time bus stop was deployed on the streets of London (Waterloo bridge) yesterday, the display allows customers to view arrival times and interactive route maps using a solar powered set of E-paper displays.

E-paper uses no power once the image is displayed and changes are powered via solar, which means this is the greenest and clearest information interface that can be produced giving the consumer up to date information in high resolution, the electronic displays also vastly reduces the cost of ownership as there is no need to physically visit the site with remote updates being used to change content.  

Technoframe have and will continue to deploy more stops helping London to become one of the greenest and technologically advance cities in the world.

E-paper, driving evolution in London public transportation

October 2015

Digital signage is an important driver of enhancing the experience of living and commute in a Smart City. The new electronic paper displays for London bus stops and buses have been presented at the Coach and bus live exhibition in Birmingham, showcasing how this disrupting screen technology helps translate information and communication technologies into better public transportation services. But just as e-signage presents an opportunity for development of London’s transportation services, it is not without its challenges.

To enable a truly smart, and therefore sustainable and green urban living space, digital signs should support energy saving features, be implementable even at the most demanding of locations, power grid or no, and feature superb visibility in all light conditions. Ticking all of these boxes are smart signs developed on electronic paper technology.

Thanks to Transport for London, being open for the most innovative technology, the UK capital can now boast the most advanced and green of display technologies at several bus stops, also first buses have already been equipped with the destination blinds, build on the shatterproof electronic paper displays.

Endless applications for Smart Cities

Since the e-ink displays feature extremely low energy consumption and therefore minimal impact on the environment; they can be powered by solar energy enabling green digitalisation of city services and solutions for the smart cities. The cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity options enable central management and provide up to date public transport information for the passengers, just as for the users of other city services.

 


 

TfL Innovations Day - Technoframe display the next innovation of the bus destination blind

March 2015

Working in partnership with Transport for London, Technoframe were tasked with the project of digitising bus destination blinds to provide a high level of additional and automated information for the passenger. The TfL Innovations Day was an opportunity for us demonstrate our Smart City Displays e-Paper System and show how it could be used in the application as an electronic bus destination blind.

For over 100 years destination blinds have been a printed roller blind system, that are specific to each bus/route. To update a roller blind requires a new one to be printed then taken to the bus to be installed. Smart City Displays e-Paper System will allow the destination blind to be integrated with the iBus Passenger Information System and existing on-by systems to provide additional and automated information.

The key benefits of a Electronic bus destination blind are;

  1. Improved level of accuracy of the destination shown.
  2. Additional automated information.
  3. Quick and simple updating of destination information.
  4. Integration with existing on board systems.
  5. Potential to reduce costs through reduction of weight and power consumption.

In April a trial is due to commence on three in service buses. These will be the first buses ever to have digital destination blinds.
